How to Reach Your 2019 goals: Breaking Down the Goal

We survived the first week of 2019!  I’m sure that you have new year’s resolutions for the year that you, like me,…didn’t work on this week. But it’s OKAY! We have a whole year left to work on it.  I want to help you reach your new year’s resolution with this little series called how to reach your 2019 goals. I created a system to help me reach my new year’s resolutions and over the next few posts, I will share my system and how it works. You probably want to know does it work? Well, I tested out last November and December and I am happy with the results: I completed all my year end goals! So all that said, let me share with you how to reach your 2019 goals: breaking down the goal.

The first thing to do is to identify the goal for the year. A goal is “the object of a person’s ambition or effort; an aim or desired result.” – Dictionary. Ask yourself what is your desired outcome for this goal? Are you willing to make changes to reach your goal? How invested are you in reaching your goal?  It’s important to ask yourself these questions because it makes you think. Sometimes you need to revise your goal before you start to make it obtainable.

After you ask yourself these questions and revised your goal (if needed), then you need to break down the goal/goals. You want to break down your goals for the year into little manageable goals. An example, I want to get fit this year. I have a weight loss goal for 2019 that I am going to complete. However, looking at the big goal I get discouraged and want to grab some ice cream and quit. But when I break it down into little goals I can reach them and do not reach for the ice cream.

When breaking down your goals, start with a week. What can you do within a week to reach your goal?  For me, go to the gym at least 4 times a week, drink 4 bottles of water a day etc.. Complete the goal for a couple of weeks then make a new goal for the month. What can you do for the month? 60 days? 90 days? 120 days? Before you know it the year will be over and you would have reached your goal!

Google Keep

Tip: Use something where you can write down your goals for the day, week, month etc. I use Keep. Keep is a note-taking service provided through Google ( this is NOT sponsored). With Google Keep, you can take notes through audio, images or create lists. You can use it on your computer, tablet and there is an app that you can download to use on your phone. You can set daily reminders and when you complete something check it off the list. On Sunday I will make a list of manageable goals from my new year’s resolution. I sometimes break it down by day or just type out all of the goals. Then I will set a reminder with a due date and work on it all week. It is a great way to reach your goals!

“Your goals are the road maps that guide you and show you what is possible for your life. ” – Les Brown

Always know that is okay if you do not reach your smaller goals. Something that I fail to remember is that I have a whole year to work on this goal; that’s 12 months,  52 weeks, 365 days, and 8,760 hours, so work hard but understand you have time. There is a saying that I love that says, sometimes you might lose the battle but you’re trying to win the war so keep fighting! The same is true for your new year’s resolution. You are trying to reach your goal/goals for 2019, so if you do not make your weekly goals, it is okay; reevaluate and start over!

I hope that this was helpful. Here is a link to a goal planner that I created. Here you can write down your 2019 goals down and manageable goals by month, week and day. Have fun this second week in 2019 and remember to be real, be unique and be you this year!
