Learning How to Take the First Steps in Faith

Hey everyone! Learning or relearning how to have faith in God and trusting Him can be difficult. I like to think of learning how to trust God like a baby taking its first steps. The baby knows that it’s capable to walk, but it is a new and unknown experience. Does the baby decide not to walk? No! The baby takes its first steps. In those first few steps, the baby will fall however it’s not discouraged but tries again and again until it’s walking.

You’re probably asking why am I talking about a baby learning how to walk? Because beginning to have faith and trust in God is sort of like a baby learning how to walk. There will be times where you are going to fall and not trust God to work things out for you but believe me He will! I am relearning how to have faith and to trust God. There are times that my faith is so weak to the point it does not exist. However, I have learned three important tips that have helped me to begin to take steps in walking in faith.

  • Get a Spiritual Accountability Partner. Pray and ask God for someone that you can trust with your prayer requests and someone you know will pray for you. Having a spiritual accountability partner allows you to be vulnerable regarding your relationship with God and about anything else. They can serve as someone to help you by praying with you, having Bible studies together, sharing their testimony, or just by being there for you.
  • Trust God with Small Things. When learning or relearning to have faith and to trust God, start by trusting Him with small things. Ask God for guidance on which way to take to work or to school. Baby steps help to build a good faith foundation.
  • Spend quality time praying and studying the Bible. When studying the Bible ask God to open your eyes and to see the faith that is embedded in scripture. Some of my favorite faith stories in the Bible are Abraham*, Esther*, the woman with the issue of blood*, the friends that brought their friend to Jesus*, and David and Goliath*. Pray and ask God to help your faith to grow in Him.

When learning how to take the first steps in faith, remember that you won’t get it right at the beginning. There will be times that your faith will be small but faith is like a muscle; the more you have faith in God and trust Him, the greater your faith will be! One day you will have faith the size of a mustard seed and be able to tell mountains to move!

Until Next Time,

Elyse
